The Marketing Engineer.

Every platform shift mints a new kind of builder. The cloud gave us the site reliability engineer and the DevOps engineer. The data stack gave us the data engineer. Palantir put engineers in the field and called them forward deployed. AI agents are minting the next one: the Marketing Engineer.

§ 01 — The problem

The console is where strategy goes to die.

Paid search funds the front page of the internet, and it still works like it's 2004: a thousand settings behind a console, knowledge trapped in screenshots and tribal memory, changes nobody can review, history nobody can read. The bigger the spend, the worse the sprawl.

§ 02 — The precedent

Engineers already solved this.

Infrastructure became code. Deploys became diffs. Review became routine, and rollback became a revert. The console didn't disappear — it just stopped being the workflow.

Your ad account could have worked this way all along — what was missing was a forcing function. AI agents are it: an agent can't click through a console, but it can read config, reason about it, and propose a change you can review. The moment your account becomes plain text, every agent becomes a marketer on your team.

The account is code.

Campaigns, ad groups, keywords, budgets, creatives — plain text, version-controlled, reviewable. If it's not in the config, it doesn't exist.

Every change is a diff.

Every edit has an author, a diff, and a review. “Who changed the budget?” is a git blame, not a meeting. Rollback is a revert, not an apology.

Agents do the clicks. Humans make the calls.

The agent reads the report, drafts the change, and opens the plan for review. You bring the judgment and taste — and you approve what ships. Direction stays human.

Ship campaigns like software.

Small changes, fast loops: plan, review, apply, measure. Launching a campaign should feel like a deploy, not a project.

History is an asset.

Every experiment, every result, every decision — written down where the next marketer, and the next agent, can find it. Accounts compound when memory does.
